Maintaining Your Hair Extensions: Do’s and Don’ts

Maintaining Your Hair Extensions: Do’s and Don’ts

Hair extensions are a game-changer when it comes to achieving fuller, longer, and more versatile hairstyles. But whether you’ve chosen clip-ins, tape-ins, wefts, or keratin bonds, one thing remains true, proper maintenance is essential to keep your extensions looking flawless and lasting longer.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key do’s and don’ts of hair extension care so you can get the most out of your investment while keeping your natural hair healthy, too.

Use Sulphate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner

Regular shampoos often contain sulphates that can weaken the adhesive in tape-in or bonded extensions and dry out both natural hair and extensions.

Don’t Wash Too Frequently

Washing too often can loosen bonds, dry out the hair, and shorten the life of your extensions.

Best practice:
Wash your hair 2–3 times per week, using lukewarm water. Dry shampoo is your best friend between washes to keep your roots fresh.

Brush Your Hair Daily (But Gently)

Tangles are one of the biggest threats to your extensions. Use a loop brush or a wide-tooth comb and start brushing from the ends, working your way up to avoid tugging.

Don’t Brush Wet Extensions

Hair is more fragile when wet, and brushing at that point can lead to serious breakage.

Instead:
Gently pat dry with a towel, apply a detangling spray, and wait until your hair is at least 70% dry before brushing.

Use Heat Protectant Before Styling

Just like natural hair, extensions can become dry and brittle from heat styling. Always apply a heat protectant spray before using straighteners, curling wands, or blow dryers.

Don’t Sleep with Wet Hair Extensions

Sleeping with damp hair can cause tangling, matting, and even mould (especially in thick or tape-in extensions).

Solution:
Make sure your hair is completely dry before bed and tie it in a loose braid or ponytail to prevent knots while you sleep.

Visit Your Stylist for Maintenance

Professional upkeep is key, especially for tape-ins, wefts, and keratin bonds. Your stylist will ensure the extensions are still secure, reposition tapes if needed, and remove or reapply them safely.

How often?
Every 6–8 weeks is standard for most semi-permanent extension types.

Don’t Use Heavy Oils Near the Bonds

While natural oils like argan or coconut oil are great for the mid-lengths and ends, avoid applying them near the roots or adhesive areas. Oils can weaken the bond and cause extensions to slip out.

Use a Silk or Satin Pillowcase

Switching to a silk or satin pillowcase helps reduce friction and tangling overnight, keeping both your natural hair and extensions smoother and shinier.

Treat Your Extensions Like Your Natural Hair (Or Better!)

Hair extensions can be a low-maintenance luxury, but only when cared for correctly. By following these simple do’s and don’ts, you can ensure your extensions stay looking salon-fresh for weeks (or even months) while keeping your natural hair healthy and protected.
